Marrakech
One day, a hundred and sixty kilometres, and already the feeling of having changed country. The Ourika Valley starts forty minutes from Marrakech and climbs towards the first High Atlas summits.
The road follows the river, shaded by poplars. You pass villages clinging to the slope, pottery stalls and cafés terraced above the water. Traffic is heavy at weekends: leave early, or pick a weekday.
The village marks the end of the driveable road. From there, a path leads in an hour’s walk to the waterfalls. It is the natural lunch stop.
This is the ideal first day out: doable on a scooter or a motorcycle, with no technical difficulty, and short enough to be back in Marrakech before dark.
Out on the Ourika road, first bends in the foothills.
Lunch by the river and waterfalls reachable on foot.
Back through the pottery villages and gardens.
